UPDATE - August 15, 2025

The removal of a hazardous Douglas-fir was undertaken today at Eagles Lake Park. Due to its hazardous condition, immediate removal was necessary.

Unfortunately, due to the extent of the rot the tree created a considerable mess along the beach. Cleanup is scheduled to begin next week, as the debris was more extensive than anticipated.

The park is now open and safe for visitors, though we acknowledge the beach may not look its best. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to restore the area.

UPDATE - August 12, 2025

Following a comprehensive tree condition and risk assessment,  the removal of a hazardous Douglas-fir has been recommended. In coordination with a certified biologist and a professional tree service provider, directing the tree fall into Eagles Lake has been identified as the most suitable approach to preserve the ecological balance of Eagles Lake Park.

Removal operations are scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, commencing at 7:00 am and concluding between 2:00pm and 5:00 pm. Please note that Eagles Lake Road will be temporarily closed during this period. We respectfully request that all vehicles parked on Eagles Lake Road be relocated prior to the commencement of this work to ensure safe and efficient access.

Eagles Lake Park is expected to reopen following completion of these activities.

This action reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to public safety and responsible stewardship of environmental resources on behalf of Highlands residents.

The District of Highlands has identified a hazardous Douglas-fir tree located near the beach access at Eagles Lake Park.

A professional assessment of the tree’s condition and associated risks has been completed, concluding that the Douglas-fir should be removed before the upcoming winter storm season to prevent potential harm to park visitors.

Following recent tragic events in an Island community involving falling trees, there is heightened public awareness of the risks posed by unstable trees in recreational areas. In response, Eagles Lake Park has been temporarily closed as a proactive safety measure. District staff are actively preparing to implement mitigation efforts to address the hazard and ensure visitor safety.

The District remains committed to protecting residents and visitors while preserving the integrity of our natural spaces.
